A superbly shot, viscerally raw and superbly acted drama from legendary filmmaker Phillip Kaufman, The Unbearable Lightness of Being merges its historical context with a love triangle that threatens to teeter into overt melodrama, but survives thanks to the excellent trio of performances from DDL, Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin.

Its greatness is arguably stunted by its excessive 171 minute runtime and generally methodical pace, but its existential musings are more universal than they immediately seem.

You probably won't want to watch it that often, but it's nevertheless an ambitious and uncompromising adaptation of a challenging novel.
