The film that scored the actor his first Best Actor Oscar nomination and win, My Left Foot remains one of the all-time best screen depictions of a person suffering with a physical disability, and is arguably one of the best-ever film performances period.

That DDL manages to transcend the potentially gimmicky nature of his intense method acting and delivers not only a physically convincing protagonist but a well-rounded human being is a testament to the depth of his turn, not to mention Jim Sheridan's exceptional direction.

Largely free of treacly weepie movie cliches, this is a full-bodied, devastating masterpiece and one no self-professed fan of the actor can be without.
