Martin Scorsese's savage period epic may be plenty flawed, but DDL's turn as Bill The Butcher is absolutely beyond reproach at every turn.

Legitimately terrifying in the way that few performances are, history probably won't look too fondly on him losing the Best Actor Oscar to Adrien Brody for The Pianist, but gold statues aside, it's a monumental example of just how deeply an actor can bury themselves in a role.

It's a part that requires him to combine his physically imposing potential with his real-life charm, and he pulls it off perfectly. DiCaprio and Diaz didn't stand a chance working opposite him.
