6. Mallrats (1995)

If Clerks was the perfect portrait of depressive, soulless employment for the generational demographic Smith carved his fanbase out of, Mallrats was a picture of the same group at play. It was far more flawed than Smith's first movie - prompting a far more angry response from critics than the film actually deserves

There isn't as much inherent nastiness to Mallrats - which also prompted some sneaking suspicions of Smith having "sold out" - but it's more simply that the director starting directing before he had really learned his craft. He was a writer whose work was successful when confined to mostly one setting and the writing was the star: add in too many new elements and environments and it looks a little flabby.

But taking away the direct comparison to Clerks and it's still a good watch: the characters are great (Jason Lee's Brodie is genius) the script zings in places and it has developed a cult following for a reason.
