5. Schindler's List (1993)
Spielberg famously directed Schindler's List for free because he would've deemed taking payment as "blood money", in what's without question his most personal and meaningful cinematic contribution to date.
Tacky though it might be to say, this is the quintessential "Holocaust movie", a deeply harrowing yet achingly human account of the horrors that took place, headlined by a never-better Liam Neeson (scoring him his sole Oscar nomination to date) and fantastic support from Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley.
Janusz Kamiński's eye-watering, Oscar-winning cinematography frames the director's most emotional film, and though some take umbrage with the girl in the red coat as a sentimental step too far, it feels well-earned in a heart-wrenching yet mildly hopeful film.
It's most certainly one of the worthiest Best Picture-Best Director winners ever, that's for sure.
