3. Jaws (1975)
Jaws was the standard-bearer for the onset of blockbuster cinema, and remains a towering example of everything it should be. Though much of its success can be deemed accidental - a malfunctioning mechanical shark forced Spielberg to obscure it for most of the film - the director's ability to work smart under intense pressure is clearly a facet of his immense filmmaking skill.
With one of his best-ever casts, a universally-known John Williams score, some intriguing political allusions and a riveting man vs. nature theme, Jaws is the suspense thriller at its most pure and expertly executed.
Even without the thrill-a-minute pacing that audiences expect these days, it's aged ludicrously well - dodgy shark aside - and is surely capable of terrifying just about anyone you sit in front of it.
