3. Terminator: Dark Fate

Paramount

Considering some of the cynicism that met Dark Fate's announcement (and the inclusion, once more, of Arnie), it's a rather wonderful feeling to be able to report that it's not only a good Terminator sequel, but also a very good action sci-fi.

For once, there's no attempt to over explain anything or even bother talking about the timeline or how the dystopian future remains possible, the Genisys nonsense is excised and there's a very smart escalation of the Sarah/John Connor story.

There's a little too much humour in the T-800's role, but it's not all unwelcome and not all unsuccessful and there's more than enough balance in the emotion, spectacle and balls-to-the-wall action that Tim Miller brings.

It deserves to inspire a sequel, even if it might feel like there's a lot left behind, because it poses some interesting questions for the future of the franchise. And the performances of Linda Hamilton, Mackenzie Davis and a terrifying Gabriel Luna are all excellent.

Shame the title is so awful though.
