Look, the 1986 Transformers animated movie is basically just a toy commercial strung together by a scarcely coherent plot, but it's also a breathless, action-packed and ludicrously entertaining effort.
Clocking in at roughly half the length of any of Bay's films, The Transformers: The Movie also gives The Last Knight a run for its money in the weirdness stakes.
This is a film where Orson Welles voices the all-devouring planet Unicron, Optimus Prime dies at the end of the first act, a character randomly says "s***!" and Eric Idle appears as a warbling, motormouth Autobot. And it's all set to an incongruous yet weirdly fitting glam rock soundtrack. Yup.
Honestly the narrative isn't leaps ahead of the Bay movies, but it generally has a firmer handle on what this world of characters is supposed to be and delivers snappy, easy viewing within a reasonable run-time.
