3. The Compelling New Setting

Props to the filmmakers for finally leaving the cabin-in-the-woods setting in the dust and shifting Evil Dead into an urban environment, which helps distinguish Rise from everything that came before.

Sure, it doesn't do a whole lot to change the spine of the story and the circumstances through which the family are prevented from leaving the apartment building are contrived to say the least, but knowing that all hell is breaking loose in the middle of a massive city gives Rise a distinct flavour to its predecessors.

If nothing else, that the film successfully transplants the Evil Dead formula to a new location should embolden the series to branch out further in future entries and give us Deadites somewhere totally unexpected.
