Fantastic Beasts: 10 Reasons Why The Crimes Of Grindelwald Is A Massive Disappointment
5. Legacy Characters Are Wasted
Legacy characters from the Potter franchise such as Nagini or Nicolas Flamel may be in this film but they're never really a part of this film.
Take Nagini for example. She shows up in the first act and Credence and the circus-owner she works for proceed to drop loads of exposition about how she's a Maledictus, meaning she can turn into a snake at will and will eventually be stuck that way forever. For the uninitiated, Nagini goes on to be the snake at Voldemort's side throughout the Potter films and even one of Voldemort's Horcruxes in the Deathly Hallows films.
So as one can imagine, this constantly repeated exposition about her snake form is delivered with all the subtlety of a jack-hammer. But after this, she hardly even says a line for the remainder of the film. Sure, she's in lots of scenes with Credence throughout the movie, but she doesn't actually do anything to make her an even-remotely-active character in the story.
The same is true of Nicolas Flamel, who shows up to essentially name-drop his own name and give fans an Easter Egg appearance of the Philosopher's Stone. And that's it.
Rowling seems to think just tacking these characters onto the story is enough to get Potter fans salivating but then completely forgets to give them anything to do.
