Fantastic Beasts: 10 Reasons Why The Crimes Of Grindelwald Is A Massive Disappointment

3. Grindelwald Himself Is Laughable

Much has been made of Johnny Depp's Grindelwald, from the controversial casting to his actual work in the film as a whole.

Honestly, Depp isn't awful here. It's a marked improvement over his other more recent performances, a few dead-behind-the-eyes deliveries aside. But his performance never leaves any kind of impact because the film itself could, pretty obviously, not care less about this character.

Even in the weakest Harry Potter films, Voldemort was treated as an ominous and dangerous force to be reckoned with. Anytime he or one of his conduits appeared on screen the music became foreboding and the camera would give him a big, cinematic entrance.

Grindelwald, on the other hand, just shows up.

He has a sizable chunk of screentime in this film and absolutely none of it is devoted to making the audience fear him or think of him as a legitimate threat. Instead, he just shows up places with zero fanfare and spends the majority of the film just hanging out in his new flat.

For a film literally named after him, Crimes of Grindelwald can't seem to be bothered to do even the bare minimum to make its villain seem villainous.
