Finch Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The Humour Doesn't Always Work
The film's issues with striking a consistent tone are one thing, but it's another entirely that the more humourous elements don't always rouse the intended laughs.
Finch is pretty hit-and-miss in this regard: most of the physical gags involving newborn robot Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) are broad enough to appeal to younger audiences, but those more invested in the survival story may find them low-effort and uninteresting.
Audiences are likely to be split on a gag where dog Goodyear urinates on Jeff, and while the film thankfully doesn't get so childish very often, the comedy works better when it's more subdued and less gag-y.
The gentle, inherently amusing bond between man and robot is what functions best, but there are certainly times where it's clearly playing for lowest common denominator audiences.
