First Look: Zack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH!

By Matt Holmes /

So this is what an ambitious $100 million, 99% all female, 1960's set, R-Rated, "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns" movie with song and dance numbers, from the director of Watchmen and 300 looks like? After the CGI-enhanced muscled men torso's & homoerotic overtones of 300, and the fetishistic spandex of Watchmen, I can't say I'm overly surprised by the S & M, Frank Miller/Sin City style costumes of Zack Snyder's fantasy Sucker Punch (Warner Bros, March). I think at this point, we all know he has certain, shall we say 'heightened sexual fantasies', and he isn't afraid to share them with us in a Quentin Tarantino style way. In fact, this movie feels like all those wet dreams he had over his six years of writing it, his first original movie. The girls from left to right; Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Emily Browning (the lead), Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung. Sucker Punch centers on a girl named Babby Doll (Browning) who enters an alternative reality with her friends (pictured above) to escape a mental institution her evil step father (Gerard Plunkett) has placed her in, with the plan to lobotimze her in five days. Amazingly, the movie is a Warner Bros. production, blowing to pieces that 'no female lead' policy that was brought in a few years ago. Scott Glenn is the general in the background, one of the few men in this alongside Robin Hood villain Oscar Isaac and Mad Men actor Jon Hamm. Snyder favourite Carla Gugino is the only cast member from Watchmen to be carried over. The above image is in the latest EW issue (you know, that one with Green Lantern on the cover that you may have seen scanned onto the web), and inevitably we can expect more to be revealed at Comic Con next week - potentially with firm answers to whether it's going to be in 2D or post-converted 3D.
