Although George RR Martin eloquently talks about how his image of female characters in Westeros is heavily influenced by the historical periods the show is based on, it does appear that season 7 is making immediate strides to embrace more positive feminist messages.

Arya is an icon, Sansa has grown some serious cojones (and seemingly - mercifully - won't be trapped in yet another abusive relationship) and Lyanna Mormont will strike down any man who dares question her equality. Even Jon Snow seemed intent on levelling the field, suggesting that women deserve to fight and die just as much as their brothers, fathers and sons.

The message was widely read, and it's definitely going down well.

About time, really.
