Can you guys remember the Life of Pi score? I certainly can't, despite liking the film and certainly appreciating its technical proficiency. Given how strong the rest of this category is, it's a surprise that Mychael Danna's score took the gong home; the category's other notable nominees included Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil's sublime, ethereal work on Cloud Atlas (which was ridiculously snubbed by the Academy), Dario Marianelli's singular score for Anna Karenina (which is the best thing in a pretty mediocre film), and John Williams' swelling - but not overly sentimental - Lincoln score. Pi comes out as the most inconsequential of the bunch, a film driven more by its visuals than its sonic qualities, whereas several of the other films actually had a more memorable score that drove the film beyond what it would otherwise have been capable of.
