6. Tom Hanks' Reliably Solid Performance

It won't shock anyone to learn that Tom Hanks gives a strong performance in the role of Captain Krause, bringing his usual everyman relatability to the part of an inexperienced commander desperately trying to escape the German assault.

It helps that Krause is by far the best-developed of the central characters, but even then, Hanks is entirely believable as the anxious yet forthright captain: authoritative, but courteous to his men and as such commanding deep respect.

The role clearly isn't a huge stretch for Hanks, admittedly, but he nevertheless convincingly rips through a slew of heady nautical dialogue and brings his usual mannered humanity to Krause.

He ensures that even during the film's most sedate, action-free moments, there's always something compelling to observe.
