Why?
It's all in the suggestion that he might be ear-marked for a romantic relationship with Mantis (an unnecessary one at that), which would blunt him as a weapon and as a character. The one thing that unites all of the Guardians is their emotional wounds, and giving any of them a happy ending makes them stick out a little too much.
Sure, he has unfinished business with Thanos, too, but he's also easily the most expendable of the entire crew. The funniest, yes, but also the one with the fewest loose ends to tie up and rather worryingly, he's the easiest part of the brand to cut loose.
This might all be expecting too much, because the film doesn't NEED to kill anyone, but that link to Mantis might make him a worry.
