In rather surprising news, Twitch are reporting that Harrison Ford has entered early talks to reprise the replicant-hunter Deckard in Ridley Scott's sequel to his own 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. The film is setup at rights holders Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. In November, Scott revealed that the new Blade Runner movie was "liable to be a sequel" and now with Ford in talks, it looks like it will be a true follow-up and not a movie that distances itself from the original but is set in the same universe. With Ridley Scott returning to his even older Alien franchise with this summer's Prometheus, we thought this kind of loose connection would tie in the two Blade Runner films, where it is basically a brand new sci-fi that is leeched on to a popular franchise to gain further fan interest. But the way this is going, this is Blade Runner 2 alright. And wouldn't a sequel with an aging Deckard finally reveal one of film's most discussed points... is he or isn't he a replicant? Blade Runner was of course set in 2019, a year that is now a lot more foreseeable. In the original, organic robots with superhuman powers called replicants were hiding on Earth and it was up to the blade runners to hunt them down. Ford played Deckard, a kind of Raymond Chandler/Humphrey Bogart esque runner who falls in love with a replicant and is determined to keep her alive. Cranky old Ford (who turns 70 in the summer) has spent the last three decades distancing himself from Blade Runner, a movie which came in-between his other two most famous roles Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Angered at the final cut of the film that was released theatrically, Ford called it "a fucking nightmare" and has rarely had good things to say about it since. So why is Ford interested? Well we don't know specifically that he is at this point. He may just be willing to listen to Alcon Entertainment's offer which if the money is crazy enough he might just come back for another. Ford hasn't been a box office hit outside of the Indiana Jones saga for years and years and years and with Steven Spielberg stacking up his directorial deck for the foreseeable future, that cash cow has gone for Ford now. He may be coming back for one last pay-off before blockbuster retirement. The project is setup at Alcon Entertainment who acquired the rights to the series and are determined to get a new film off the ground. Interestingly Alcon Entertainment chief Andrew Kosove said last August; that "In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting." But maybe things have changed when Scott developed the story further and perhaps they heard Ford was available. With no screenwriter yet hired (they are searching apparently, and I imagine Prometheus writer Damon Lindelof was first on the list but maybe he has turned them down?) we are an awful long way from the movie filming soon and I just wonder if Scott wants to secure Harrison Ford before setting a writer on the sequel to avoid a situation like Bill Murray and Ghostbusters 3 where the writers worked on a script for months involving Peter Venkman that Murray couldn't even be bothered to read. Ford is next to star in Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic '42'.
