Harry Potter: 10 Best Characters Who Aren’t Witches Or Wizards
2. The Dursleys
The Dursleys appear in every Harry Potter novel. Given all three of them are Muggles, they know very little about the wizarding world. From their perspective, anything to do with magic is dangerous, including the Potters.
Harry was abused throughout his upbringing. He was always made to feel inferior to his cousin Dudley, who would bully him whenever he got the chance. But everything changes when Harry receives his letter from Hogwarts. Rather than suffering the abuse of his relatives all the time, Harry only has to visit them during the summer holidays from now on.
Yet the Dursleys still play a significant role.
The incident with the hover charm, the episode with Aunt Marge, and Dudley’s encounter with the Dementors are all highly entertaining. Indeed, despite how wicked the Dursleys are, they can often be amusing. There’s a comedic flavour which emanates from all three of them, especially Uncle Vernon.
What’s more, there’s also some great character development in The Deathly Hallows. Dudley finally learns to appreciate his cousin, and during Harry’s trip inside the Pensieve he learns about Aunt Petunia’s desire to become a witch like her sister. Both these moments are unexpected and they add some great depth to the Dursleys.
