4. The Dystopian Backstory - One Night Only

One Night Only is one of the most intriguingly premised rom-coms ever made - a film which takes place in a world where premarital sex is illegal and singletons are permitted just a single night of the year to hook up with impunity.

But the movie swiftly unravels by making the classic mistake of over-explaining itself. 

Rather than simply taking place in a heightened reality where premarital sex is extremely stigmatised for reasons unknown, ample screen time is devoted to detailing that the United States is a conservative capitalist dystopia that actively monitors and legislates the sex lives of its citizens.

This overegged world-building ultimately forces the audience to think far deeper than they ever should about a frothy rom-com, and above all else, the dystopian setting really puts a dent in any sexy chemistry the film might be trying to muster between leads Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner.

With a vaguer, more fantastical approach to its central premise, One Night Only could've been great rather than a bewilderingly muddled mess.
