Although adding a female elf in Tauriel couldve been forgiven due to the virtually all-male cast of The Hobbit, the same cannot be said for adding Legolas. Legolas was introduced as the Elvenkings son, and harbored a distrust of dwarves. From his first speech lines, viewers could tell that this was a different Legolas from the Lord of the Rings. Though he was still the skilled fighter, he was always scowling and constantly showed hostility towards Thorin and his companions. It was especially bizarre to see Legolas, who seemed to have such a good relationship with Gimli in the Lord of the Rings, to be so much contempt for Thorin's company, which included Gimli's father. Furthermore, his involvement in the film added more time and unnecessary scenes to it. All he did was emphasize the distrust between elves and dwarves, which was something the Elvenking did well enough, and seemed to have romantic feelings towards Tauriel. Of course, he also took part in the added action sequences, which were completely unnecessary because they were not believable; everyone knew Legolas would survive any and every fight in this film series.
