20 Wild Horror Movie Casting Choices We Almost Got

17. Jessica Walter - Chucky (Child's Play)

Though it's impossible to conceive of anyone else but Brad Dourif voicing killer doll Chucky in Child's Play - sorry, Mark Hamill - the casting process was actually something of a headache for producers.

Given that Dourif portrays Chucky's flesh-and-blood alter-ego Charles Lee Ray in the movie, he was naturally their first choice to also voice Chucky, but when he became unavailable during post-production, the filmmakers hired actor John Franklin to provide the voice instead.

When test audiences reacted negatively to Franklin's voice, though, they discarded his recordings and again approached Dourif, who was still unavailable while working on another film.

And so, another actor was brought in to voice Chucky - Jessica Walter, who is of course best known nowadays for her incredible work on Arrested Development and Archer.

A woman was cast in the role amid the belief that it would lend a creepier quality to Chucky, like Mercedes McCambridge voicing Pazuzu in The Exorcist, but when Dourif became available later in post-production, Walter's recordings were also binned.

Dourif is Chucky, so there's no issue there, but it's a damn shame that Walter's recordings as Chucky have never seen the light of day.
