20 Horror Movie Happy Endings Nobody Saw Coming
7. The Babadook
While it would be disingenuous to suggest that The Babadook has an ultra-sunny, squeaky-clean happy ending, it does find our embattled protagonist Amelia (Essie Davis) in a far better state than she was when the film started.
At the beginning, Amelia is a traumatised, exhausted single mother still mourning the death of her husband, and soon enough finds herself and her young son terrorised by the entity known as the Babadook - effectively a metaphor for her grief.
Amelia manages to eventually successfully confront the creature, cornering it to her basement where she finds something of a compromise with it - soothing it and feeding it worms but no longer allowing it to terrorise her.
Basically, Amelia's inner turmoil isn't magically defeated, but she has found a way to manage it and move on with her life - a perfect encapsulation of the fact that, for many, grief never entirely leaves them.
