2. A Dark Song

Between its title and brutal subject matter, there wasn't much of a reason to expect anything approaching a happy ending from 2016's A Dark Song.

Embittered protagonist Sophia (Catherine Walker) plans to enact a months-long occult ritual which will summon her guardian angel and consequently allow her to speak to her late seven-year-old son.

As Sophia and occultist Joseph (Steve Oram) embark on the gruelling ritual, Sophia eventually confesses that she actually plans to ask her guardian angel for revenge against the person who kidnapped and killed her son.

As we reach the climax, things look increasingly bleak - Joseph dies and Sophia finds herself assailed by demons, just as her guardian angel emerges. 

She ultimately relents and asks the angel for the power to forgive, it smiles, and the ending implies that her request has been granted.

At the end of such an unnervingly atmospheric film, this strangely serene ending was a much-needed tonic. We don't know precisely what the future holds for Sophia, but she's clearly in a much better place than when the movie began.
