8. The Lodge

The Lodge is another classic example of a film that seems to be painting within familiar genre lines but is actually doing something far, far more interesting than it first appears.

Riley Keough stars as Grace, a soon-to-be-stepmother who ends up stranded with her fiancé's two children at a remote lodge over Christmas.

The Shining of it all speaks for itself, but filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala clearly weren't content to merely warm-over the genre's finest - opting instead to take things down a whole other path.

Franz and Fiala agonisingly unfurl a grim mystery the particulars of which don't become clear until much later on, and just when you think you have it all pegged, they throw a spanner in the works to have you rethinking everything you've just sat through.

Ultimately some of The Lodge's bolder risks might be too much for some, but for adventurous, open-minded audiences prepared to dive down this rabbit-hole, it's one of the most evocative horrors of the past decade.
