If you've seen the trailer for Companion then the game is probably already over for you, considering that it frustratingly gives away the film's big, brilliant conceit for free.

But if you haven't engaged with the marketing for Drew Hancock's storming debut, it stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple whose weekend cabin getaway with friends swiftly devolves into sheer mayhem. And that's all we'll say.

Hancock's meticulously constructed nesting doll of twists and turns is best experienced as blankly as possible, because if you've got no idea where he's going with it, it'll hit you like a cinematic slap in the face.

Sophie Thatcher is magnificent in the lead role, but it's Hancock's approach to building out the internal logic of his strange world that truly makes Companion sing as both a taut horror-thriller, a black comedy, and something else we can't even mention for fear of ruining it all.
