14. Barbarian

Barbarian is the film that put Zach Cregger on the map, and a big part of its success rested on a smart, mysterious marketing campaign which refused to give away the story's bolder surprises.

Even if you watched the trailers ad nauseum, they really only showed the tip of the narrative iceberg and didn't even hint at some of the more daring and unexpected fare in store.

And that bracing unpredictability is hugely effective in keeping the audience on their toes, such that reading anything beyond the most basic

 premise - revolving around a woman (Georgina Campbell) who finds her Airbnb rental already occupied by a man (Bill Skarsgård) - would be a huge mistake.

There's tremendous joy to be had discovering every sick shock Cregger has waiting for audiences, and the less you know about what it's doing beforehand, absolutely the better.

And the same is certainly true of Cregger's Oscar-winning follow-up, Weapons.
