Samurai Jack's Genndy Tartakovsky is the crown in Sony Animation's crown. Not only did he deliver them a bona fide hit in Hotel Transylvania, he's since developed this sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2, and a Popeye movie, both at the same time. This is alongside the multiple original features he's working up for the studio, and the guidance he's been giving to other filmmakers at the same camp. But I do hope he's not spreading himself too thin. This teaser for Hotel Transylvania 2 can't tell us much about the new film's story, and certainly not how satisfying or well-shaped that might be, but it does show the same sense of cartoonish animation and bold poses that Tartakovsky nailed in the first film. Like many teaser trailers for animated features, this promo is structured around one extended sequence. I wonder why this is such a trend? I'm sure market research backs it up, but it's a weird quirk of modern trailer-making. It goes back to Scrat in the Ice Age films I think. It would have been nice to get a look at Drac's dad, as voiced by Mel Brooks. He seems to be the big new cast addition - with Keegan Michael Key joining as a replacement for Ceelo Green as The Mummy and not a new character.
