Let's face it, Will Smith hasn't exactly been in a lot of great action flicks of late. Especially in the sci-fi vein. Need we remind anyone of After Earth? While he's not exactly box office poison, and is a marketable star, at this point, Smith's presence would likely have been an unnecessary distraction. He would no doubt overshadow the movie, while not necessarily bringing anything to the table that the ensemble cast doesn't already have, at least in terms of on-screen talent. So in this case, the lack of the original film's biggest star might actually be a blessing in disguise. Though it'll be hard not to miss getting to hear him say "Welcome to Earf!" again.
