7. It's Boring & Lacks Suspense
Despite clocking in at a totally reasonable 103 minutes, the film feels far longer than that due to the poor pacing and the simple fact that most of what populates the runtime is incredibly boring.
Though things kick off intriguingly enough with a flashback to Elise Rainier's (Lin Shaye) past, the present-set mystery, as Elise explores the remnants of her childhood home, is painfully dull for the most part.
It doesn't help at all that the various set-pieces within the house are agonisingly slow and totally bereft of anything approaching suspense or tension. Ultimately you're just left waiting for the next inevitable jump scare, and it makes huge portions of the movie an absolute chore to sit through.
The best movies in the series - the first one, basically - thrived on atmosphere, but this one is almost entirely lacking anything approaching an unsettling mood or tone.
