For as much as he is preoccupied with making modifications to Iron Man suits at the beginning of the film, Stark spends the least amount of time in the suit in comparison with the first two films. Stark engages in combat while not in the Iron Man armor as well. As a result, he proves that he does not always need to be in the suit to be a hero. Having assistance from JARVIS with the programmed suits that help to defeat the allies of Aldrich Killian during the climax provides Stark with help to defeat the villain. In Iron Man 2, specifically during his birthday party and throughout the initial scene with Nick Fury afterward, Stark didn't really need to being wearing the armor. In Iron Man 3, there are no sequences that invoke these kinds of questions because there are more legitimate reasons as to why Stark may be not wearing or wearing the suit. An example is when JARVIS shuts down and prevents Tony from leaving Tennessee.
