Samuel L Jackson has already hinted that his Nick Fury would be returning for Captain Marvel after Infinity War - presumably meaning he survives the coming of Thanos. Back in February, he told We Got This Covered about his future Marvel plans:

“Yeah, I’d love to do a Nick Fury movie. I’m always open and game. But they got Infinity Wars, two movies to do there, and after that there’s Brie [Larson’s] movie Captain Marvel, which maybe [Nick] will be part of.”

Now it appears that Fury's role in the film is being confirmed by at least one source, despite the fact that his contract with the studio would be fulfilled by his appearances in Infinity War and Avengers 4. Presumably, that means there's a new deal on the table.

The confirmation comes courtesy of Omega Underground's Christopher M. who took to Twitter to confirm that principal photography for the film - which currently has the working title of Warbird - is set to start on January 8th 2018 in Atlanta.

All we really know about the film's plot is that it will be an origin story, set up by Carol Danvers' appearance in Infinity War, and that the Quantum Realm will come back into focus after debuting in Ant-Man. We probably won't get to see the same origin story as established in the comics, and co-writer Nicole Perlman has said to expect tweaks to help it fit with the existing MCU.

Presumably, Fury's role would be to shepherd Danvers into the new strain of the Avengers that is built in the aftermath of Infinity War. At the very least, he's bound to be a mentor of some sort.
