Do these self financed casting pitches by actors ever really impress Hollywood studio's enough to take a gamble on giving them a lead role in a tentpole movie? The latest desperation act video audition tape for a movie that we can't be sure Marvel Studio's are that serious about making comes from "that Old Spice guy" Isaiah Mustafa who has created his own 45 seconds worth of trailer footage to show the studio what he could deliver as black superhero Luke Cage. It's cheesy as hell and Mustafa really struggles to be convincing but good on him for giving it a shot; Mustafa has been keen on playing Luke Cage in a tentpole for some time, even so far as claiming last year that he had already told Marvel he wanted it;
Ive already had a meeting with Marvel. I talked to them and I told them that I was a gracious reader of their comics and that I wanted to be Luke Cage. So well see where they take it.
Almost like clockwork every year we hear faint rumblings of Marvel pushing ahead with a Luke Cage film only for no talent to be brought on board. The last time we heard something on Luke Cage was last June where a modestly budgeted film in the $20-30 million mark was promised and I imagine we are probably due a further update soon. The Daily Blam have done a good job of explaining who Cage is;
A streetwise youth, the man called Carl Lucas was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. In exchange for parole, Lucas clandestinely underwent an experimental procedure, originally intended to generate immunity to all illness; instead, it inadvertently granted him steel-hard skin and heavier, enhanced muscle. After escaping Seagate Prison, he forged the identity of "Luke Cage" becoming a hero for hire -- a sort of super-enhanced private detective -- although Cage commonly refused money, or simply received none, for cases.
Meanwhile, optimistic Marvel fans are hoping that the secret meeting Idris Elba had this weekend pertains to a Luke Cage movie....
