What was the point in rebooting the saga anyway?
Star Trek 4 will feature Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk coming face to face with the man he long thought dead – his father, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in the 2009 reboot.
Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot confirmed the news on Monday after producer J.J. Abrams, uncharacteristically for him, leaked the key plot point earlier in the week.
"Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in the 2009 reboot Star Trek, will return to play George Kirk."
Hemsworth was a little known at the time the first movie was released, only featuring in the opening minutes, before being killed, on the same day his son, Captain James. T. Kirk was born.
Fast-forward to 2016 and he is an Asgardian God-sized mega star, proving to be a huge coup for the Star Trek Franchise moving forward.
The press release makes no mention of Justin Lin returning to direct the fourth outing, but that possibility could follow quickly if Star Trek opens big this week as some critics expect.
JJ Abrams is confirmed to produce the currently untitled fourth Star Trek film of the rebooted universe with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay on screenplay duties.
