At HaHa's, Arthur's place of employment where he works as an entertainer clown-for-hire, pay attention to a painting on the walls as Arthur is doing up his shirt and laughing out loud at his co-workers.

The painting shows a jester battling a pack of lions, which is an incredibly tight, apt metaphor for the movie itself.

Whether you consider the lions society - especially the careless rich - or a metaphorical representation of mental illness, Arthur is most certainly the jester in this scenario, desperately scrapping to survive.
