Pleasing science fiction fans is a tough proposition. I believe they are the most selective and difficult group of fans to rally. Theyll praise you one moment, denigrate you the next. Hey, it comes with the territory of being a filmmaker. Science Fiction is not like many of the other cherished genres it does not follow a straight formula. Superhero fans want something that is rather simple a villain who causes chaos is defeated by a protagonist hero after an epic struggle. Not to simplify, but that basic premise is the root of all these comic book superhero adaptations Spider Man, The Dark Knight, The Avengers, etc. Its simplicity is exactly why it is successful - people are buying the familiar. However, science fiction is supposed to push boundaries, change perceptions, and subsequently cannot be boiled down to a simple premise. That is why there is so much diversity within the genre. That diversity is also a cause for division. When a filmmaker strays from pre-conceived notions or established set-ups within a said universe, there is much discontent within fanboy circles. On the flip side, if you make a film that repeats the story of the first, you are not original. This is not the case with many other genres (like action films, comic book adaptations) where repeating the same premise is not only expected, but praised. This is precisely why the filmmakers of the upcoming Jurassic Park IV are in between a rock and a hard place. Their creative choices will lead the franchise down one path or the other. Regardless of the road traveled, they are bound to infuriate some section of supporters. The following are five choices the filmmakers will have to make, each with their own pitfalls and fan expectations.
