Justice League Vs The Fatal Five: Everything We Know About The JL Reunion

The DC Animated Universe is back in a big way.

One thing that Warner Bros. and DC has always done well is animation. Between the awesome crop of animated series that introduced us to iconic characters like Batman, Superman and the Justice League, to animated feature films which brought some of DC’s greatest stories to life, WB has found its footing in the animation department telling some truly fantastic stories.

Its latest entry, Justice League Vs The Fatal Five, is said to have a wholly original story. This is a departure from the norm as most of the DC animated films are direct adaptations of popular stories (Under The Red Hood, Flashpoint & All-Star Superman come to mind). Besides a “sneak peek” available on YouTube, and the cover art for the DVD, DC fans have been left in the dark as to the finer details of the film.

Fortunately, however, there is some good news. The film is set to herald the return of the DC Animated Universe to the small-screen, with 2017's Batman and Harley Quinn the last feature to do so.

Between that film, Fatal Five, and the reemerge of shows like Justice League on DC Universe, could this be the return of WB's fan-favourite continuity? Let's take a look and find out.

7. Style & Substance

When preview material was released for Justice League Vs The Fatal Five, one of the first things fans noticed was the familiar art style and character designs of artist Bruce Timm. Timm is credited with the creation and development of the DC Animated Universe, a connected universe of animated shows which includes Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Incredibly innovative and spanning almost a decade, those shows and their distinct character models influenced and informed an entire generation of superhero fans. With that in mind, it surely looks as though DC are tapping into the nostalgia caused by fans seeing their favorite superhero team just as they remembered them growing up.

Details regarding the story are relatively sparse, as producers have admitted that the film isn’t based on any singular adapted story, but instead inspired by Jim Shooter’s run on Legion of Superheroes. The official synopsis reads as follows:

“Justice League vs. The Fatal Five finds the fate of the earth hanging in the balance when the Justice League faces a powerful new threat — the Fatal Five! Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman seek answers as the time-traveling trio of Mano, Persuader, and Tharok terrorize Metropolis in search of budding Green Lantern, Jessica Cruz. With her unwilling help, they aim to free remaining Fatal Five members Emerald Empress and Validus to carry out their sinister plan. But the Justice League has also discovered an ally from another time in the peculiar Star Boy — brimming with volatile power, could he be the key to thwarting the Fatal Five? An epic battle against ultimate evil awaits!”
