6. Thomasin McKenzie's Strong Lead Performance

Universal

To the surprise of absolutely nobody who's ever seen her act, Thomasin McKenzie gives a commanding performance in the lead role of Ellie, a troubled young woman who begins a University course in fashion design in London while struggling to cope with a traumatic past.

Though Ellie is certainly one of Wright's trickier protagonists, McKenzie does a stellar job bringing sympathy to an individual desperately attempting to remain above water in the Big Smoke as her reality begins to unravel around her.

McKenzie captures the moment-to-moment anxieties of Ellie's life brilliantly, and even when the script doesn't give her much to work with, she's a thoroughly compelling leading lady.
