Le Mans '66 Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
A highly entertaining crowd-pleaser.
Le Mans '66 - or as it's known internationally, Ford v Ferrari - is in cinemas now, and while it hasn't been whipping up quite the same awards hype as some of the year's most buzzed-about releases, it's absolutely one of the 2019's most entertaining films to date.
A smart, agreeably broad sports drama fine-tuned for maximum thrills, Le Mans '66 is a shining example of familiar material done well.
You've seen the basic beats before, but it's shot through with so much panache and enthusiasm that it quickly becomes very difficult to resist.
While it remains to be seen whether or not the film can raise enough support to break into the Best Picture Oscar race, it's certainly an outside contender, and is likely to score plenty of support for not only its two terrific leads, but also its exemplary technical accomplishments.
It may not be the most thoughtful or envelope-pushing movie you'll see in 2019, but sometimes a genre film executed with an immense amount of skill is exactly what the soul craves. In that respect and many others, Le Mans '66 absolutely delivers...
