Based on the cult-classic video-game of the same name, 2005's Doom was a rather underwhelming affair. Featuring Dredd 3D star Karl Urban and everyone's favourite wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Doom had all the makings of an explosive Sci-Fi action thriller. However, unlike the video game, which was lauded for its pioneering of the first person shooter genre, the film was sluggish and occasionally difficult to follow. It featured a storyline which contrasted that of the game and could therefore only be described as an adaptation in name. Of the story itself, the film follows the path of a response team who are sent to Mars after a research facility's distress call. On arrival, they are greeted by humanoid mutants who have developed animalistic characteristics after the break-out of a virus. Naturally, all hell breaks loose as the squad attempts to fight for survival; think Dog Soldiers but less fun. Critics and fans alike reacted negatively upon Doom's initial release; it is one of the many Mars-based films that is probably best left forgotten.
