"Millers film often feels like a great silent movie albeit a very loud one." - Robbie Collin, The Telegraph "Some of the most brilliant visions are only seen for one shot, and that's how special the Mad Max world is. Even a cutaway is indicative of the world." - Fred Topel, Nerd Report "George Miller pours his heart and soul into some truly visionary and gonzo sequences of vehicular carnage." - "If Francisco Goya painted Heavy Metal magazine, it'd look something like Fury Road." - Matt Patches, Esquire
Despite its standing as a loud and relentless action movie that refuses to say die, many critics found Mad Max: Fury Road to be surprisingly artful. Some compared it to that of a silent movie, whilst others found the details, imagery and world-building to be on the beautiful side. Not at all what you'd expect from a blockbuster with "Mad Max" in its title. A lot of the praise directed at the movie seems to address the way in which Miller has crafted his apocalyptic world; small touches here and there that hint at much larger ideas. And then there are all the artistic allusions scattered throughout the reviews - many of which compare what Miller has achieved to the work of famous painters and surrealists.
