2. Sam Lane

We’ve mentioned him a fair bit throughout this list and that solidifies just why Sam Lane is a great adversary for Superman. He’s largely distrustful of those with superhuman abilities, monitoring meta-humans and believing Superman to be a ticking time bomb regardless of public opinion.

On top of this, he is the absent father of Lois Lane. A military man displeased at having a daughter instead of a son, he has a contentious relationship with the reporter at best. This raises the emotional stakes and grounds them in humanity - something normally lacking when dealing with Kryptonian links we've become accustomed to in the Superman adaptations to date.

Although a hero in his own mind, Lane constantly makes questionable decisions in his pursuit of the protection of mankind. From being responsible to creating and empowering some of Superman's greatest villains to occasoinally siding with and supporting Lex Luthor, Sam Lane is a frustrating thorn in the Man of Steel’s side and one that can’t easily be dealt with due to their familial relations.
