Man Of Steel 2: 8 Comic Book Storylines That Must Be Adapted
2. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
In Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Lex Luthor is controversially elected President of the USA. With supreme power at this disposal, Lex sets out to turn the population against superheroes and makes Superman and Batman public enemies number one and two. Going underground, the pair have to work out how to bring Luthor’s institution down.
For starters, Man of Steel 2 adapting Public Enemies would go some way to fixing the issues with BvS. This movie would see Supes and Bats teaming up as crime-fighting best friends, just as we have known them to do for decades, instead of tearing at each other’s throats like in the previous film. The (dynamic) duo being forced to work together as they become fugitives from the law could give the film a brilliant ‘odd couple/buddy cop’ angle.
A Public Enemies adaptation would also reboot the DCEU’s Lex Luthor as a real threat. OK, it might seem a bit of a stretch that a convicted psychopath currently locked up in Arkham Asylum could be elected president but, hey, unlikely political leaders are a thing in the real world, let alone the comic book one.
This storyline would actually be one where Jesse Eisenberg’s left-field casting as Luthor would be a plus. If we had a more traditional Lex, the comparisons to Donald Trump would be far too on the nose. Though Luthor would also be a business tycoon who had risen to the seat of office, Eisenberg’s younger, quirkier take would help take the character in a different direction while still allowing for some political satire.
