Casting such a legendary role can be troublesome. Recently the film industry has gotten it right, with Downey Jr. as Iron Man, or Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne (Nolan's Batman was more about Bruce's struggle than Batman's overall necessity to Gotham). But the industry has also seen its share of misses, most recently with Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Whatever the case, they are always taking a chance casting a virtual unknown in such a pivotal role. Enter Henry Cavill. While some would argue casting a foreigner as the utmost American comic book character to be borderline blasphemous, the choice will ultimately prove to be a good one. Cavill has proven he can handle the role of the sci-fi lead with his recent turn in Immortals last year. But more importantly he looks the part of a coming of age Clark Kent, and that's what Snyder's Superman story will be all about: A young man with extraordinary abilities who is trying to find his place in a world that he believes isn't ready for him. Cavill embodies the youth of the Smallville farm boy ready to become a man, but has the physique and to show us all who Clark Kent was born to become. For these reasons, among so many others, I think we should all take a step back from questioning that whats and ifs of what's next for the Superman character in cinema, and take time to think about the possibility of what can be.
