2. Trent Reznor & Atticus' Ross Surprising Musical Score

Netflix

Mank once again sees Fincher collaborating with composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who deliver a musical score quite unlike anything they've ever made before - either for Fincher or as artists in their own rights.

Rather than employ pulsing synths, the pair only used instruments that were authentic to the period, resulting in a soundscape you'd never traditionally attribute to the duo.

Indeed, much of the musical score evokes the style of a brassy orchestral score from a '30s or '40s studio picture, albeit tinged with a sinister undertone you'd more typically expect from Reznor and Ross.

It's entirely possible they'll pick up their second Best Original Score Oscars for their work here, fittingly coming a decade after they scooped their first gongs for scoring The Social Network.
