Directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke and based on their award-winning short film of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Freeman is set to play the protagonist, a father named Andy who must save his infant child from an infestation of the undead, whatever the cost. After suffering an attack himself he has just 48 hours to find a suitable guardian before the infection turns him into one of the undead.

The film marks the feature length debut for the Australian co-directors, following on from the viral success of their short film, with Kristina "The Babadook" Ceyton producing for Screen Australia.

Cargo represents another interesting choice in Freeman's career, who has struck an effective balance between large scale blockbusters such as The Hobbit trilogy and critically acclaimed roles in TV projects including Fargo and Sherlock.
