Another important plot point involving the Fantastic Four is the marital strife between Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. After some debate, Reed and Sue end up on different sides of the conflict, even stepping onto the battlefield as opposing combatants. Reed is portrayed as a genius who is unable to see what's right in front of his face so that he becomes easy to dislike, while Sue wears her heart on her sleeves when it comes to her convictions. In Civil War #4, Sue shows up just in the nick of time to rescue Cap and his team, and then later on in the issue officially leaves Reed with a "Dear John" letter at his bedside in the middle of the night. It's a poignant moment that shows how a difference of opinions on matters as passionate as politics can rip apart an otherwise strong relationship.
