Last month Marvel Studios announced plans to make a movie based on The Eternals, and now comes news that they have recruited Matthew and Ryan Firpo to write the script.

The Firpo brothers landed on the Black List last year with a script titled Ruin, which tells the story of a former Nazi Captain who seeks to atone for his past crimes by hunting down and killing former members of his SS squad. The script has garnered plenty of attention, even peaking the interest of Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, and now - as per THR - Marvel have come calling.

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby in 1976. Tipped as a cosmic Game of Thrones, the story begins millions of years ago when the ancient cosmic beings known as the Celestials experimented on the human race creating The Eternals and their monstrous rivals The Deviants. The Eternals kept themselves hidden from humanity as their war with The Deviants waged on.

The Eternals could potentially kick off phase 4 of the MCU given their connection to Thanos in the comics. The Eternals, lead by The Mentor (AKA Thanos' father in the comics), sought refuge on Thanos' home planet Titan.

Marvel's choice to put their trust in as yet untested writers further shows their determination to recruit little know talent as opposed to the big names. This strategy has worked well for the studio so far with filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler, the Russo brothers, John Watts, John Francis Daley and John Goldstein, to name a few, proving to be huge successes.

There is no word on when the film might be released and as yet no director attached but it certainly presents a tantalising idea.
