MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Thor: Ragnarok
1. It's A Little Too Funny For Its Own Good
As ludicrously entertaining as Ragnarok is, it's also hard not to come away from it wishing that it dialled the humour back just a tad. This is a film with a paper-thin narrative focusing instead on its characters, but even their development feels somewhat stifled by the almost non-stop attempt to wring laughs out of any given situation.
Barely anything sticks dramatically in this movie, and once it's all over, there's very little that actually lingers with the viewer. Sure, nobody wanted Ragnarok to be a depressing dirge, but considering that several key characters in Thor's life are killed, he loses an eye and his homeworld is destroyed, you think it'd have a little more staying power.
Though Ragnarok is miles ahead of both prior Thor movies, at least the first Thor movie in particular actually brought some weight and gravitas to its Shakespearean drama. Here, themes of life, death and family are basically lighter than air.
