After Emily Blunt dropped out of the running for Black Widow, Gemma Arterton was briefly considered for the part.
Fresh off her memorable role as Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, it really seemed like Arterton was set to become a hot commodity in Hollywood. However, the Black Widow gig ultimately fell through, and nowadays she generally sticks to the indie scene.
Would It Have Worked?: Definitely. Arterton certainly has the looks and chops for the part - and a suitably raspy voice to match Scarlett Johansson's - but there's really no shame in losing to Scar-Jo, is there?
Plus, it would've made Tony Stark's drooling over her in Iron Man 2 seem even more icky - given that Arterton would be just 23 at the time of shooting - so it was probably for the best.
